Tarnowskie Gory Mine, New Polish Inscription on UNESCO World Heritage List

The 41st Session of the World Heritage Committee in Krakow has decided to inscribe Poland's historic lead, silver and zinc mine at Tarnowskie Gory together with its underground water management system on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Tarnowskie Gory mine is Poland's largest, most accessible and best preserved historic site exemplifying how mining technique and water engineering developed in the course of almost 300 years. The mine embodies the European diffusion of technologies and civilisations, and testifies to the ties that existed between various societies during the Industrial Revolution. The site owes its present-day condition and World Heritage List inscription to the many years of efforts by community organisations and local authorities. Inscription on the prestigious list gives a boost to the town and region as tourist destinations in Poland and abroad.

From the very beginning, Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions, notably the Permanent Representation to UNESCO in Paris, have been involved in promoting the bid of Tarnowskie Gory, and have enlisted support among the World Heritage Committee members.
