Senator John McCain, the 2014 recipient of the Spirit of Jan Karski Award

"The Board of Directors of the Jan Karski Educational Foundation voted unanimously to honor Senator McCain for his courageous leadership and willingness to speak truth to power about international acts of aggression," said Andrzej Rojek, chairman of the board of directors of the Foundation. "This award recognizes Senator McCain\'s leadership and lifetime of achievements on behalf of humanity -- in the spirit of Jan Karski."

The award will celebrated on November 20 at the annual foundation gala event at the Polish Consulate in New York City. David Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee and a member of the Foundation\'s Advisory Board, will offer remarks in connection with the award presentation.

The Foundation grew out of the successful Jan Karski US Centennial Campaign, which placed Dr. Karski\'s name in nomination for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Medal was conferred posthumously on Dr. Karski on May 29, 2012 by President Obama at a White House ceremony.

The mission of the Foundation is to instill in the people of the United States -- and especially its youth -- the values of leadership, courage, integrity and humanitarian action, as exemplified by the life of Jan Karski. "Previous award recipients have included Samantha Power, US Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Polish Consul General in New York Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka," said Foundation President Wanda Urbanska. "We are honored that Senator McCain will accept this award."
