Top Polish Authors at BOOKEXPO AMERICA 2016

Aquila Polonica, The Polish Book Institute, The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago, The Copernicus Center, BookExpo America and The Polish Cultural Institute New York present Polish History Events at  BOOKEXPO AMERICA: Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - Saturday, May 14, 2016 - Chicago and the surrounding area.

Join us for a series of events celebrating Polish history and heroism during the 20th century. Los Angeles-based publishing house Aquila Polonica's mission is to spread the word about Poland's World War II history, through the works of those who experienced these events firsthand.

Aquila Polonica will be featuring two of its latest authors promoting their new books. Polish-American poet John Z. Guzlowski was born to Polish parents in a refugee camp in Germany after World War II. His parents had been slave laborers in Nazi Germany during the war, and came to America as Displaced Persons in 1951. Growing up in immigrant neighborhoods in Chicago, he met many people who had survived terrible conditions during the war. This collection of poems, Echoes of Tattered Tongues, draws on those memories and paints a portrait of suffering and survival that reverberates to this day.

Julian Kulski was the son of the Mayor of Warsaw and a child soldier in Polish resistance from the age of 12 to the age of 16. He infiltrated the Warsaw Ghetto, was imprisoned and tortured by Nazi Germans, and fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. After the war he settled in the United States, where he became a respected architect. His riveting wartime diary, The Color of Courage, has been awarded the Benjamin Franklin Award by the Independent Book Publishers Association.

Aquila Polonica president Terry Tegnazian will present the work of her publishing house at the Chicago's Copernicus Center. She will tell the story of how she, an American with no Polish roots, came to devote herself to promoting the history of Poland's struggle in the Second World War. Ms. Tegnazian will be joined by Kulski and Guzlowski, with a special guest appearance by musician, composer and historian Marek Zebrowski, who will discuss his work on Jan Ignacy Paderewski.

These events coincide with BookExpo America, North Americas largest book fair, which takes place this year in Chicago and where Poland is featured as country of honor. Kulski and Guzlowski will hold readings and book signings at BookExpo, as well as at venues throughout the Chicago area during the week. Please note that events taking place at BookExpo are open only to those registered to attend the book fair.

Polish history events at BEA are co-presented by Aquila Polonica, the Polish Book Institute, BookExpo America, the Copernicus Center, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago.
