Hummels to Bayern Munich a Sensible Move

Michael Skok     25 kwietnia, 2016

With Pep Guardiola looking to take his leave at the end of the season for Manchester, Bayern Munich will prepare life after him with the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti. One of the players touted to be one of the Italian’s new signings is Borussia Dortmund defender and captain, Mats Hummels. Years ago, it may have been a fantasy, but now it might look incredibly likely to happen.

The German international will be on the final year of his contract come next season. At the age of 27, he will likely have one big-money move left before the inevitable decline in his thirties. Borussia Dortmund will be back to the Champions League next summer, but with the likely departures of Ilkay Gundogen and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, it’s possible that his chances of winning the Champions League (or even a domestic league title) may be very difficult to achieve. His father, who originally had been employed and eventually discharged by the club, is now an agent for several youth players at Bayern, and admitted that the Bavarian giant could be a destination for his son. Hummels would not have to move far to join one of the elite clubs in Europe, and would most probably work with a player who he already pairs considerably well with in Jerome Boateng in the German national team.

From Bayern’s perspective, they will have landed an experience German International; with the rumors of Sebastion Rode and Mario Gotze leaving in the summer, bringing in another German would help them in maintaining the identity of the club (while also bringing back a former youth product). What’s more, the fitness and form of Mehdi Benatia, who was originally supposed to be the partner for Jerome Boateng, is highly in question, with a possibility of the Moroccan defender himself leaving at the end of the season. Holger Badstuber has unfortunately never been fully fit and available an entire season recently; while Javi Martinez would most likely slot back into the midfield under Carlo Ancelotti. Hummels is a ready made package, and already has chemistry with Boateng, so the acclimatization period would be minimal at most. There is also the indirect benefit of weakening Munich’s title rival, while keeping elite talent within the league.

In the end, Hummels to Bayern would make an incredible amount of sense for both parties in the end. Dortmund would perhaps want to avoid another Lewandowski situation, selling Hummels on early instead of allowing him to depart on a free would allow the German side to recoup some cash and use it for future transfers.
