Are Bayern Munich done with the Transfer Window?

Michael Skok     25 lipca, 2016

Bayern Munich made major signings incredibly early on in the transfer season. Bringing in Mats Hummels and Renato Sanches, Bayern bought one of the best defenders as well as one of the greatest prospects currently in world football. With Carlo Ancelotti at the helm with a squad that is one of, if not the most talented in Europe; Bayern already look set to dominate next season both in Germany and in Europe. But are there more places where the Bavarian juggernaut can improve?

In midfield, Bayern boast one of the deepest talent pools in club football. Xabi Alonso, Joshua Kimmich, Arturo Vidal, Thiago, Renato Sanches are sure candidates there. Javi Martinez, David Alaba, and Phillip Lahm have all excelled at the center of the park as well. The options there are endless for Carlo Ancelotti, and is certainly the part of the pitch were Bayern are well stocked.

Offensively, Bayern offloaded Mario Gotze; but with a high amount of depth there as well, it won’t be that much of a miss. Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, and Kingsley Coman can all play in the offensive part of the pitch. However, with the injury patterns and aging of Robben and Ribery; bringing in a winger/forward would certainly help Ancelotti’s squad. What’s more, there is no clear backup striker for Lewandowski, even though Muller can play quite well in that position. A player akin to Alexis Sanchez, who can both play on the wings and as a center forward can allow Ancelotti to have a diverse amount of talent to pick from, regardless if Ribery and Robben are injured.

Meanwhile in defense, one can argue the German champions have the strongest backline in Europe. Manuel Neuer, who remains the best goalkeeper in the world, is now protected by a back four of David Alaba, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng, and Phillip Lahm. Hummels and Boateng have plenty of experience playing with each other, as they have formed the defensive duo for the German national team for quite some time now. Looking past the first choice defense, there is room for reinforcements. Mehdi Benatia left for Juventus, and Holger Batstuber has had a torrid time with injuries for a while. Javi Martinez could play across the back four, but it wouldn’t be ideal against counterattacking teams that have pacey forwards. One more centerback, someone experienced but willing to be rotated; would certainly add some layer of assurance if an injury crisis would hit the backline come next season.
