Arsenal’s Destructive Loss: An Expected Story

29 sierpnia, 2017

Once again, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal fell to another top six side in the league. Once again, Arsenal conceded four unanswered goals to the offensive talent of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Arsenal were unable to register a shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Liverpool could shoot ten times at Petr Cech’s goal. The lack of tactics, effort, pace, and directness was incredible to watch as Liverpool were the best in every department this match.

To go over the goals would be to repeat the same thing four times in a row. Arsenal are in possession, they cede possession in midfield. Granit Xhaka is left alone back with the back line while the full backs and Aaron Ramsey are pushing forward, leaving an incredible amount of space on the flanks as well as the middle of the field. The likes of Sadio Mane, Mohammad Salah, and Roberto Firmino exposed that space with ease. Meanwhile on the other hand, Welbeck, Ozil, and Sanchez never threatened the average defense of Liverpool.

Another disastrous detail for the match was how Arsene Wenger set up his team. Alexandre Lacazette and Kolasinac, two of the top players in their respective leagues last season, were left on the bench as Wenger continued to play players out of position. Danny Welbeck was played for Lacazette’s position, and his lack of technical ability and finishing ability never gave Arsenal anything to work with. The addition of playing a wantaway Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and subpar Hector Bellerin out of position meant the squad Arsenal put out never had a chance to win the match.

Arsenal have now lost six points out of nine in their first three matches. Arsenal’s next away game is Stamford Bridge, things can look to become worse before becoming better.
