PSG vs. Bayern Munich Preview: An early test for both sides

27 września, 2017

For the second matchday of this season’s Champions League edition, PSG and Bayern Munich will meet in Paris for a heavyweight clash of favorites for the tournament. The spotlight is on PSG, as the Parisian club spent nearly 400 million euros on Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, easily having the most high-profile transfer window in Europe. On the other side, Bayern Munich have quietly bolstered their ranks as well, with James Rodriguez and Corentin Tolisso being the most notable additions over the summer.

As things stand, both sides have had similar starts in Europe and domestically. PSG have won all of their games bar one, against Montpellier away over the weekend. While for Bayern, the Bavarians dropped points for the second time this season, throwing away a 2-0 lead against Wolfsburg at home at the Allianz Arena. Neymar, who was out for the game over the weekend, will make his return against Bayern Munich for this high-profile clash. Bayern will have to deal with the loss of Manuel Neuer, who injured his foot once again, and will be out for the Germans until early next year.

For PSG, the French capital club will want to make their mark in Europe with this new look side. Having one of the most notorious capitulations in Europe last season (following the 6-1 loss at Barcelona after beating them 4-0 in Paris), Umai Emery and his side will want to put that performance against a CL heavyweight behind them as they will play another in Bayern. The focus will be the front three of the Parisian club, as Neymar, Cavani, and Mbappe have quickly established themselves as one of the most exciting offenses in Europe.

As for Bayern, Carlo Ancelotti will want to quickly dispel any notions of a deteriorating machine at Bayern. Having already lost and drawn this Bundesliga season, allowing rivals Dortmund to be up ahead by five points, the Champions League is another competition where the Italian will hope he can win in, having done so for Real Madrid and AC Milan in his earlier career. Robert Lewandowski and James Rodriguez will be star men for Bayern, as they will bring the experience and scoring and creative ability that could potentially trouble PSG.

Ultimately, this will be a group stage match, so the stakes will not be so high; as both sides are off to good starts in their CL campaigns. This match will be a good test for either side to prove their mettle against the finest in Europe. A narrow PSG win will probably be the likely result, as the loss of Neuer can easily expose Bayern, particularly against rapid teams that can play on the break.

Result: 2-1 PSG
