Italy fail to qualify for the World Cup after Insipid Performance at Home

Michael Skok     14 listopada, 2017

Italy have failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia for only the second time in their history.

The Italian national team fell to Sweden after failing to score any goals throughout both their legs against the Scandinavian side. Sweden were able to score a solitary goal in the first leg, when they played at home in Stockholm. Italy, needing a result heading back to the San Siro, never truly threatened the resolute visitors, who put up a great defense to keep the Italians scoreless.

Italian manager Jair Ventura has attracted much criticism throughout the World Cup qualifying campaign. Often failing to utilize the most talented Italian powers in crucial games, the manager has plagued his sides’ results with poor game management, disastrous tactics, and simply not utilizing the full potential of a quite talented Italian pool of players. The latest example of being Jorginho, who has been one of the best performers of a rampant Napoli side this season, having only been recently introduced into the Italian setup.

As for Sweden, the Scandinavian side advance to the World Cup tournament along with the likes of Croatia and Switzerland, who were also part of the last chance qualifiers this week.
